NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Norio Otsuka) announced that it has received the Outstanding Technical Paper Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) for a research paper entitled “Analysis of Temperature Rise on the Traction Contact Surface of Toroidal CVTs”.
The research was conducted jointly with Technical University Munich. An award ceremony was held on May 20 at the venue of the Automotive Engineering Exposition held at Pacifico Yokohama.

Outline of the paper
With the continuing demand for improved fuel efficiency in cars, there is a corresponding need for greater transmission efficiency in the CVTs of large motor vehicles. The paper aimed to contribute to further improvements in the fuel efficiency of vehicles by presenting a formula for calculating temperature increases in CVTs and validating the formula with empirical data, thereby helping to forecast the transmission efficiency of toroidal CVTs more accurately.
